Connie sat down with a plop, the damp rag with which she’d been cleaning the kitchen table forgotten in her hand.

Every time she thought about marrying Kendal, his proposal stunned her all over again. Even more shocking than his proposal was the fact that she was considering accepting it!

Considering, my eye, she thought ruefully. I’m planning on it! Unless, of course, her brother shot down the whole idea, which he just might.

She couldn’t really blame him. The notion of a platonic marriage was pretty outlandish. Yet, in this case, it made an elegant kind of sense—for a lot of reasons.

For one thing, this might be her only opportunity to give Russell the kind of father that he deserved. After all, what other decent man would want her? That brought up a second point: Kendal needed her. Larissa needed her. What a joy it was to be able to fulfill those needs!

She’d be able to go to school now—not that she’d really have to since Kendal promised to solve her financial problems. Still, to be able to attend school without any worries was a gift beyond her dreams.

The last reason was in many ways the most important, though—at least personally.

Marriage to Kendal would prevent her from repeating the mistakes of her past. She would be forever safe from the wrong sort of attraction to the wrong sort of men. She knew one thing for sure about herself: She would never be able to betray a marriage vow, however unconventional the marriage.

No one else would ever know how much she wanted that insurance—that protection—even if she was only protecting herself from herself! Experience had taught her the necessity of such, and surely God would not have put her in this situation if it was not His will for her.

Would He?

She shook her head, unable and unwilling now to believe that marrying Kendal was not the best—the right—thing to do.

Still, she could understand why Marcus might need some convincing, which meant that they’d better go about presenting the idea very carefully.

She wondered what Kendal would think about her organizing a small dinner party here for the five of them. Marcus should definitely see this house. She’d told him about it, of course, but if he actually saw the place, he’d have a better understanding of what her life would be like here. Some good food wouldn’t hurt, either.

Yes, she’d definitely propose a dinner. In fact, she’d do more than that. She’d actually plan the thing and present it to Kendal when he came home that evening. Better yet, she’d call him at work.

Smiling, she looked around the well-appointed kitchen, with its brick walls and sleek modern appliances. She especially liked the arches over the cooktop and sink window and the pot rack over the work island.

This would be her kitchen, if all went as planned.

Now that was something she wouldn’t have believed even that morning!

They’d eat in here, she decided, rather than the formal dining room. It was cozier, more family oriented.

She went to check out the pantry to determine what Kendal had that she could use.
